TEMPORARY LARGE DATA BACKUP STORAGE FREE
It is undeniable that there are still cloud storage providers that offer 50GB of free storage. For example, Google Drive offers 15GB of free space as initial quota, Dropbox and Amazon Drive get started with 5GB of free storage for each registered account, not to mention OneDrive's 2GB of free space. Cache lifetimes tend to scale linearly with the size of the cache and inversely with the amount of data flow.Statistically, most cloud storage services on the market offer no more than 50GB of free cloud storage. At our installation the cache behavior is dominated by the write traffic. HPSS uses the cache as an I/O buffer for incoming data. For all sizes of files, access frequencies decline with the age of the files. There more » are a significant number of files written which are never read - backup files and similar files. Sixty one percent of file accesses were write accesses. We found, as expected, that the workload is distributed over file size with a declining number of files as the files get larger, so the amount of space consumed per file size increment is roughly constant up to file sizes of 1 GB. We assembled 18 months of transfer logs from a production High Performance Storage System (HPSS) system at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center(NERSC) and analyzed them to assess workload behavior and gain some insight into which cache configurations would provide the best service to the users. Database external procedure calls invoke OS based scripts to manage a staging area and the transfer of the backup files between the staging area and the Lab's HPSS. Using a modified external store and DBFS links, files are written to and read from a disk 'staging area' using Oracle's backup utility. NIF has chosen to use this technology to implement a hierarchical store for its image based SecureFile LOBs. Using the Oracle DBMS-LOB and DBMS-DBFS-HS packages a SecureFile LOB can now be archived to storage outside of the database and accessed seamlessly through a DBFS 'link'.
With Oracle 11g Release 2 database, it is now possible more » to create an application transparent, hierarchical storage system using the LC's HPSS. The Livermore Computing Center (LC) runs a High Performance Storage System (HPSS) that is capable of storing NIF's estimated 1 petabyte of diagnostic images at a fraction of what it would cost NIF to operate its own automated tape library. These images must be readily accessible once they are created and available for the 30 year lifetime of the facility. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory creates large numbers of images during each shot cycle for the analysis of optics, target inspection and target diagnostics. NERSC collected available component failure data and system-wide outages for its computational and storage systems over a six-year period and made them available to the HPC community through the Petascale Data Storage Institute. Component failure data presented in this report primarily focuses on disk drive in on of the computational system and tape drive failure in HPSS.
This paper focuses on analyzing both of these factors and their impacts on the computational and storage systems at more » NERSC. In addition, individual component failure in a system can degrade the performance of that system. A number of factors can impact system availability ranging from facility-wide power outage to a single point of failure such as network switches or global file systems. In order to address the needs of future scientific applications for storing and accessing large amounts of data in an efficient way, one needs to understand the limitations of current technologies and how they may cause systeminstability or unavailability.
